The Portuguese were in Goa for four hundred and fifty years, and they left their tiles everywhere. On the facades of churches. On the floors of ancestral homes. On the walls of old pharmacies and courthouses in Panaji. Blue and white, or polychrome, geometric or figurative, the azulejo tile is one of the most lasting visual contributions of the colonial period, and in Goa it has been absorbed so completely into the local aesthetic that most people no longer think of it as foreign at all. At Mogasu, the Portuguese tile is a design obsession. Our founder has photographed hundreds of them, in Fontainhas, in Old Goa, in the grand houses of Chandor and Loutolim, and has been finding the ones whose geometry translates most beautifully into a block print repeat. The challenge and the pleasure of a tile motif is the precision it demands. Our artisans carve each geometric form into a custom wooden block and press it with the exactness that a tile pattern requires, each impression aligned to the last, the repeat mathematically clean.
