Traditional Craft Contemporary Saree

Traditional craft does not require traditional design, and at Mogasu, the distinction between the two is where everything interesting happens. The craft we use is among the oldest in Indian textiles: wooden block printing from Bagru, Rajasthan, a tradition developed over centuries and practised today by artisan families whose knowledge is genuinely extraordinary. The design is entirely contemporary: motifs drawn from a designer's daily life on the Goan coast, from the culture and food and architecture of a place that is itself a mixture of ancient and colonial and entirely modern.
A traditional craft contemporary saree from Mogasu is not nostalgic. It does not reference the past as a selling point. It uses old techniques because old techniques produce better results — because the warmth of a hand block print on natural linen cannot be replicated by any more modern method.
The tradition is in the how. The contemporary is in the what. Both matter.
