Goa surprises people with what lives beneath its water. The Arabian Sea off the Goan coast is home to sea horses, octopus, seahorns, rays, dolphins that follow fishing boats in the early morning, and a coral reef system that most people who come to Goa for the beaches never see. Our founder did not know about most of this before she moved here, and discovering it, piece by piece, gave her an entirely new vocabulary of motifs. The under the sea print saree collection draws from this marine world not the cartoon version, but the actual observed life of the Goan coast. A seahorse rendered with the detail it deserves. A shoal of small fish in mid-turn. The tentative arms of a sea anemone. The geometric perfection of a sea urchin seen from above. Each marine motif is carved into a custom wooden block in Bagru, Rajasthan and printed by hand on Kota Doria and mul cotton, the most transparent fabrics we work with, chosen because the ocean deserves a fabric that carries light the way water does.
