Goa's spice plantations are one of the best-kept secrets of the state. Most visitors to Goa never leave the coastal strip, and so they never see the interior, where the landscape changes completely. The Western Ghats rise behind the coast, and in their foothills, pepper vines climb teak trees thirty feet high, cardamom grows in the cool shade of the forest canopy, and nutmeg hangs from branches in a yellow husk that splits open to reveal the brilliant red of its mace. Our founder visited her first Goan spice plantation on a quiet weekday and came back to the studio with a sketchbook full of botanical forms that she had not found anywhere else, the specific elegance of a pepper cluster, the geometry of a cardamom pod, the extraordinary drama of a nutmeg revealing itself. Each spice form is now a custom wooden block in Bagru, Rajasthan. Carved to our exact specifications and pressed by hand onto natural fabric in the warm, spice-toned palette that our artisans mix entirely by eye, the deep green of cardamom leaf, the warm brown of dried pepper, the red of fresh mace. Free shipping across India. With matching blouse piece.
